Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and East Africa’s largest city, is home to more than 5.3 million people. By 2035, the population is projected to grow to nearly 8 million, placing increasing pressure on the city’s infrastructure, transport systems, and environment. Yet alongside this rapid urban growth comes a growing environmental and public health crisis: air pollution.
In 2019, Nairobi’s PM2.5 concentrations were recorded at levels more than four times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended limits. Poor air quality continues to disproportionately affect low-income communities, women, children, informal workers, and residents living near roadsides, dumpsites, and industrial zones.
We expand access to local air quality data through innovative monitoring technologies and research that identifies the key sources and impacts of pollution. This evidence supports local governments and stakeholders in designing, implementing, and enforcing effective clean air policies.
We work closely with community organisers, grassroots groups, and local stakeholders to build awareness, strengthen public participation, and amplify the voices of communities most affected by air pollution.
We support Nairobi City County through technical assistance and capacity building, helping policymakers develop and implement sustainable clean air strategies and practical urban solutions.
As part of the global Breathe Cities initiative, Nairobi collaborates with cities around the world to exchange lessons, share successful approaches, and contribute to global action on clean air and climate resilience.
